Something ugly this way comes
Kathleen Parker, a conservative columnist who has decided that Palin is a serious drag on the ticket, notices something about the public.
The picture is this: Anyone who dares express an opinion that runs counter to the party line will be silenced. That doesn't sound American to me, but Stalin would approve.
Readers have every right to reject my opinion. But when we decide that a person is a traitor and should die for having an opinion different from one's own, we cross into territory that puts all freedoms at risk. (I hear you, Dixie Chicks.)
She tries to see this as a universal phenomenon afflicting the liberals as much as conservatives but her case in point (herself) is strictly a conservative affair. Though we have all seen pretty much the same reaction on leftish blogs and comments. In any case, I don't usually admire much that Parker writes, but I think this column took a bit of courage and a lot of thought.

If Kathleen Parker were a conservative, she wouldn't be advocating for the bailout bill. To me, it shows that she is the nonsensical one, not Sara Palin
Yes, because entirely sensible people go on national tv and offer to "get back to ya!" when asked a very straightforward question about her running mate.
Seems to me both the vp nominees have said some silly things lately, but I haven't heard anyone try to defend Biden's gaffe over 1929 television.pj
For anonymous: ROFLOL. Unreflective self parady is wonderful! So anyone supporting the bailout is not conservative? Well, there goes the Grand Old Party.
Maire: Apparently he was only off by 10 years. FDR did do a TV spot in 1939 - albeit to a very small audience (IIRC).
No Clemens, no! You can't defend the gaffe -- you'll undermine me entirely!!
And for anonymous (if you're still checking), don't McCain/Palin back the bailout? For good or for ill, and I'm honestly not sure which. I do take your point (I think this is your point) that government bailouts of the private sector is not generally an economically conservative ideal. Sadly, I think we live in interesting times.
Chris Buckley, Bill Buckley's child, claims that Parker has received 12,000 hate filled missives from soi-disant conservatives who, among other things, wish her mother had aborted her.
