The Saud family summons Cheney for 'talks'

Or, as CNN puts it, to "read him the riot act."

Just a little chit chat between friends, really. Don't you wish they weren't setting on top of something we desperately need to power our civilization, so we could just wish them lots of luck, and get the hell out.

It has become a cliche that the Islamic world needed a 'Protestant Reformation," but we should keep in mind that the Reformation was followed by Counter-Reformation which was followed by the aptly named "30 Years War." That war, by the way, simply devastated Germany and killed off half its population. And now we are facing an Islamic "30 Years War" with modern weapons.

Philip Jenkins (an Episcopalian!) says Islam needs the Enlightenment, not a Reformation. He says they've already had a Reformation, which is where the bad-ass traditionalists come from.

Yes, I thought the Jihadists and fundies were acting a bit like Protestants in the 16th century. But our Enlightenment was the result of two centuries of murder for Christ (and a few other things) and is now being repudiated both by the academic community and by Christian literalists.

So what is a poor Muslim to do?

The Muslims don't need an Enlightenment, since they never suffered a Dark Age.

More to the point, endless half-baked and ill-fitting historical parallels are making me yawn.

Yes, as a still active college professor I am used to being greeted with yawns.

But as for Islamic civilization never undergoing a Dark Age ... you should take one of my classes.

Islamic Dark Age - see Status Quo

The last great Islamic creation is on a hilltop in Granada.
