Battle of Ball's Bluff

At the Battle of Ball's Bluff, just a few miles north of where I was born, a US Senator was killed fighting with the Union troops.

Don't you wish Senators had the courage of their convictions to lead the troops in combat today? Or ever serve in the military?

Heck yes! But be grateful for the Senate you have - the Canadian Senate does (practically) nothing at all, except live off the fat of the land.

And this is different from ours how?

Most of us would be happy if they merely did nothing at all!

Aren't yours at least elected?

And I got the impression that there was some actual politics happening in the U.S. Senate... occasionally. Don't they block bills once in awhile?

The Canadian Senate is a political appointment for when people need to be put out to pasture. As far as I know, they just rubber-stamp everything that comes their way.

Ah. You have a point. Though the gerrymandering of voting districts has made most incumbats safe, they do have to face the voters sometimes. Unfortunately that means most of their time is spend raising money for their re-election campaign.

Still, it a refreshing view you have. Thanks.

Happy to be of service! Sometimes the grass is greener at home.

Though it doesn't sound like it's MUCH greener.
