Mormans, politics and Mitt Romney
This question occurred to me again today after I spoke - briefly- to two nice young Morman* missionaries at my door.
How many of you out there consider Mormans as Christians?
I ask, because apparently Mormans themselves do, but other Christians don't. It might be a political issue in Mitt Romney's bid for the presidency. In many ways he is a very attractive conservative candidate. He seems, however, to be positioning himself to appeal to the 'family values' conservatives and I don't see how that will work.
It is my guess that about 50% of such voters do not think he is a Christian since he is Morman and will not vote for him on that reason alone.
Any other ideas?
*When I told them I was an Episcopalian they seemed puzzled by what that might actually mean!

Isn't it MormOn?
Morman sounds like "Merman."
I think Mormons are not orthodox Christians. They're as much Christian as Jehovah's Witnesses are - so, Christian-flavoured or Christian-influenced, but not exactly milk chocolate. I mean not exactly Christian.
You should let YFH answer the door next time; the various door-to-door prosteletizers wrote off Catholics as a bad job a long time ago.
Which is pretty ironic when you consider how many fundamentalist Christians don't think Catholics are actually Christian!
Yes, I've had students ask me if 'these Catholics' were Christians.
Elliot - I don't suppose you would buy the Canadian spelling excuse?
(I've gotta think of another rationale).
BTW, why won't 'Claw of the Conciliator' allow me to make comments - it says my password is wrong?
I think it's because I switched to the Blogger Beta. It may be looking for a Google Account.

I was already to rush in with the original comment that most Christians don't consider Catholics to be Christians, when I have been beaten to the punch by every poster. Oh well.

Understandable, most Episcopalians are puzzled by what that means ;-)
A fringe sect, definitely, but they follow the Ten Commandments, the Golden Rule and the Sermon on the Mount, so they are Christian.
And I strongly doubt anything close to 50 percent of mainstream Protestants regard Mormons as non-christians.
Of course, a great many Catholics would, but too many Catholics consider Protestants as non-christian heretics anyway, so who gives a hoot.
Besides, most Christians vote based on political and moral positions, not Church membership, although the strong correlation between the two may create an illusion.
Are Catholics Christians? Of course they are, but nevertheless, apprehensive Protestants can be forgiven for having a long memory for the immense wrongs of the Catholic Church, especially given the fact that a very tiny but obnoxious minority of Catholics are still living in the Catholo-fascist cult-fantasyland of the 15th Century.
...so there, since no one else was going to say it...
