If Ford is in so much trouble....

Well, already aol.com has a news story suggesting we will be paying $3 a gal for gas pretty soon. No, not because of offshore drilling, or perp walking a few oil speculators or any of that. Good ol' supply and demand. As in ... demand is dropping.

Anyway, I am sure that when demand picks up again prices will rise ... probably sometime around, oh, at a guess, the end of November. In any case, our auto companies are suffering. Ford in particular seems to have no game plan to deal with the fuel shortage, while GM is hurling itself full steam ahead on a plug-in hybrid, the Volt.

So what does Ford plan to do? No word, as far as I know, though they might consider importing something like this.

Oh wait. That IS a Ford. Wonder why we won't see it over here?

I think I read the Ford Fiesta is coming to North America next year.

Great. I owned a Fiesta once and loved it. I hope they bring the high mpg version. If it does as well as the report says, I'll buy one. For nostalgia's sake if nothing else. Memories of all those trips up and down River Road in the Twin Cities in my little Fiesta.

I wonder whether the Ford Fiesta will come the US before GM brings any of its ethanol-based vehicles here, or the (relatively) high-mpg Opel—er, Saturn Astra.

(GM did bring the Astra, but gave it a different engine than the one used in Europe. The one used in the US—you guessed it—sucks more gas.)

Jack,
Thanks ... I think the rebadged Asta is the only viable car Saturn now has. I too have wondered why cars brought to America get so much worse mileage here than there. E.g. the SmartCar, which gets around 60mpg in Europe but has a 40mpg EPA rating here.

Though to be fair, anecdotal evidence indicates most owners of SmartCars here feel they are getting closer to 50mpg. Interesting.

Me? I am going out to test my tire pressure.
