A great literary line

My wife is reading a mystery novel set in Laos. It has such great names from the past like Luang Prabang and Vientiane. And then there is this line:

"He stepped carefully to avoid setting off the dog fart flowers."

And if that is too much local color for you, I didn't even mention the "old bull testicle trees."

I actually came online trying to look up "dog fart flowers" -- I am reading that same book right now, and I wanted very much to know what kind of flowers these were that the author refers to. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a description, but I certainly agree that it's a wonderfully evocative line!

I'm reading the book now, myself, and came online for the same purpose. Wonder how we can find out what these plants really are.
