What we thought then
'We' would be me and Joey Sobrino. 'Then' would be March of 2007. The 'what' would be what we thought about the presidential race which was already heating up enough to make me complain.
I know. Some people claim it doesn't take much to make me complain.

Ah young Joey Sobrino you had no idea what was coming.
Giuliani imploded with his overuse of everything 9/11. Richardson got shut down cold by Biden in the debate.
I liked the joke about Giuliani - that every single sentence he used was structured "Personal pronoun, 9/11, verb." Something like that.
