A Democrat speaks!

A Democratic mayor in New Mexico explaining how some important ($1million) contracts got signed.

"The day I signed ... I had way too much to drink. It was after 5 p.m. and I signed it (the contracts) and I didn't know what I was signing," Resendiz wrote as a response to questions from lawyers for the firm. "My sister had to pick me up."

The company's people claim the contracts were signed at City Hall and no one was drunk.

South Carolina - once again

No, this isn't about sex, lies, and the Republican Party. It's about the Democrats. And the just plain ol' inexplicable. Here's a brief rundown on Alvin Greene, a guy who decided to run for the Democratic nomination for the suicide run against Jim DeMint (R).

Greene's unemployed, recently out of the Army and living with his parents, and has an outstanding felony arrest from last year for showing obscene photos to a college student.

Back in March he walked into the state Democratic headquarters with a personal check for $10,400. That's the filing fee. The party people said they weren't allowed to take a personal check. It had to come from a campaign account. So a few hours later he came back with a check from a campaign account. And he signed up to run.

And that was it. He held no events. He never campaigned. He didn't go to the convention. He never filed any money filings. He never raised any money. He didn't even have a website. In other words, by every conceivable measure he never actually mounted a campaign.

Naturally he won the primary.

Gail Collins and the Democrats

Doesn't seem to admire them much. Here is what she describes trying to unite and lead them:

I like that image. The party of the rabid guinea pigs. I wonder if Toles in the Washington Post will take it up. The donkey image has about served its purpose. And she asks:

But my big question is how long the Democrats can refrain from becoming appalling.

Peggy Noonan's Convention

From today WSJ, two highlights without comment:

By the way, the best line of the convention so far? Ted Strickland of Ohio, when he echoed the 1988 Democratic convention joke about George H.W. Bush, that he was born on third and thought he hit a triple. Strickland said of George W. Bush that he was born on third and then stole second. It didn't get much attention in any of the commentary, but it's all people were talking about in the bars of Denver that night.

I'll end with Ted Kennedy's speech. It was a small masterpiece of generosity. Not only that he showed up, not only that he spoke, but that with every right to speak of himself and his career, with every right to speak about his family and his memories and the lessons he's learned and the great things he's seen, with all the right to dwell on those things he produced: a speech about Barack Obama. Telling America to vote for him. How classy was that? Very.

Rebublican hotties hotter than Democracts!!

In an effort to give the Repubs equal time I want to point out the reaction on Matt Yglesias'* blog regarding The Hill newspaper's 50 most Beautiful People on Capitol Hill list. Apparently the list, as well as snarky reactions to it, is a DC rite of summer. Here's the reason for this post, a comment by Keith one of the readers:

Is it me or are the Republican women WAY hotter (relatively speaking) than the Democrats?

Whining liberal elitists immediately wrote in attacking poor Keith in the vilest way for speaking truth to power.

See? I can too give Republicans credit when they do something right.

Though of course there are those Repub men - check out Vito Fossella (R-NY)

Hope Springs Eternal at NRO

You can't claim that the folks over at NRO's 'The Corner' aren't optimistic. They are gleefully touting up all the headlines that spell trouble for the Democrats. And you can't say they don't have a point, especially with that stuff about the possibility of a brokered convention. But they are also excited about the stories of Hillary's campaign being in financial trouble and her top staff going without pay. Which, if true, means that the stories about the brokered convention are pointless.

Still, one or the other would be fine for NRO. And who knows, the Democrats could be in serious trouble.

For all I know.

Demos and Mr Tomorrow

Well, I have to admit (through only slightly gritted teeth), Tom Tomorrow has perfectly captured the spirit of the Democratic juggernaut as it crunches towards its inevitable (unless not) victory in November.
